• Residency Model Pushes TESOL Candidates, Develops Strong Teachers

  • Teachers of English as a new language at Syracuse’s Grant Middle School say they are fortunate to host residents from the SUNY Oswego TESOL program, who spend a full academic year working with them in a coteaching model. Oswego faculty explain the rationale for their recent move to a residency model, which is considerably more intensive than the old student teaching model. “It’s almost like we combine that clinical learning experience with an induction year,” says Assistant Professor Anneke McEvoy. Professor Bruce Long Peng says candidates are benefiting from the holistic experiences gained from being embedded in the school community.
