A full school year of coteaching clinical practice provides a strong induction into the teaching profession, say SUNY Oswego teacher candidates and their host teachers in Syracuse City Schools. The teacher residents develop confidence that they’re on the right career path, and their skill and maturity at graduation are in demand in the job market, says Pat Russo, director of the Center for Urban Schools. For those who are hired in the district, the well-established mentor relationships continue to provide valuable support.
