Critiquing the Canon: Towards a More Critical Use of Lareau's "Unequal Childhoods" in Teacher Preparation

In this presentation, I highlight how popularized texts in teacher preparation must be taught critically, comparatively or replaced altogether in order to challenge the overwhelming whiteness (Sleeter, 2017) of teacher preparation. Through a critical analysis of Lareau's Unequal Childhoods: Class, Race and Family Life, I describe the dangers of engaging textually with Black communities without centering their voices.
