This presentation explore the challenges facing teaching social studies in a climate where ideas of equity, change, and democratic enlightenment clash with reactionary ideologies designed to protect the status quo. We argue that an inquiry-based approach to learning provides a space to explore both the problems and possibilities of educating for an enlightened democratic citizenry.
